Challenge

For St George it was an opportunity to further improve to retain more of their top talent and improve staff retention.

A common theme in engagement feedback was a desire for more personal development and discussions about their future in the company. Team members wanted more guidance and support from their managers.

St George was working on cultural change more broadly and recognised that there was an opportunity to upskill managers in core leadership and management skills.

The knock-on effect of upskilling mangers would be two-fold. Firstly, it showed that St George were investing in their managers. This, in turn would benefit the staff they managed, since they would also feel valued and developed, hence improving their performance and loyalty.

Solution

The management training named 'Activ8 Team' was aimed at multiple populations of managers; those being externally recruited into a management positions, those being internally promoted to become managers and finally those that were already managers but had no prior training.

There was a consultation process in which the sponsors and Accelerator came together to identify the key areas of change.

These themes drove the content design centred around ‘foundations of management’ based on three modules: Empower, Trust, and Perform, The design introduced models and concepts to participants, working on these through plenary and breakout groups. Participants were split into groups of twelve and it ran for three full days, with a different specialist facilitator for each theme.

During COVID, St George and Accelerator flexed the design and approach to the programme so that it could be delivered virtually, in half-days. This showed a real endeavour to be agile and flexible.

Accelerator now run this programme twice every year.

Results

St George conducted a ‘Your Voice’ survey to assess the change in employee perception of their development.
