Challenge

NHG ensures residents are at the heart of all they do. To ensure employees are supported to provide excellent customer service and are satisfied in the role they do, NHG offer a number of development and learning opportunities including partnering with Accelerator to provide Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) training and support.

“Working with Accelerator has played a key role in achieving our wellbeing strategy. Accelerators’ adaptability during the pandemic, meant we were able to continue with our mental health programme and did not have to pause our ambitious target of 10% of the business being trained as Mental Health First Aiders.” “With their continued support and expertise this year, we surpassed the 100 trained MHFA mark and are continuing with training more colleagues and providing refreshers through the year."

Solution

The MHFA training is delivered on a 12-month rolling programme. To kick things off, Accelerator lead consultant, Nina Maan, holds a 90-minute pre-course meeting with the attendees. MHFA training can be intense and triggering, so this allows staff to meet and become familiar and more comfortable with each other. The training is then run over four modules, with a few days between sessions. Each participant achieves a formal certification after completing the course. Nina has monthly reviews with Natalie as NHG’s ED&I and Wellbeing lead, in which they assess how the cohort of attendees found the training, and whether any key themes were raised so further development can be considered. Together they set dates, times, process applications and Accelerator even sends over promotional material to support NHG’s comms team to help advertise the courses. After each training course, Nina sets up a WhatsApp group for participants to chat and stay in touch. If staff have questions or need advice, they know Nina is there for them. They can discuss things as a group and Nina often drops in articles or videos for staff to think about.
